SUNRISE, Fla. -- Jonathan Huberdeau waited four seasons before finally experiencing the Stanley Cup playoffs. If the Florida Panthers have their way, hell be a postseason fixture for years to come.A well-paid fixture, too.Huberdeaus $35.4 million, six-year extension was formally announced by the Panthers on Wednesday, the forward becoming yet another piece of the teams young core to be locked into a long-term deal since January -- and another sign that the long-sputtering franchise has turned a corner toward becoming a legit title contender.Jonathan is a highly talented and dynamic player who is another important piece of our teams young core, Panthers President Dale Tallon said. That core came at a cost, one that the Panthers dont seem to mind.So far in 2016 alone, the Panthers have committed more than $184 million in contracts to five players who are all age 25 or younger. Aleksander Barkov (who turned 21 last week) signed an extension in January, and Aaron Ekblad (20), Vincent Trocheck (23), Reilly Smith (25) and now Huberdeau (23) all got extensions done this summer. That total doesnt even count the $24.6 million, six-year deal that 24-year-old Nick Bjugstad signed late in 2014, nor does it include the acquisition of All-Star defenseman Keith Yandle or the retaining of Jaromir Jagr this offseason. The Panthers won the Atlantic Division last season, reaching the playoffs for the second time since 2000 and falling in the first round to the New York Islanders. Florida opens training camp later this month.Huberdeaus deal -- which was confirmed Tuesday by agent Allan Walsh -- gives the Panthers 10 players who are under NHL contracts for at least the next four seasons. Also on that list: Barkov, Ekblad, Trocheck, Smith, Bjugstad, Yandle, goalies Roberto Luongo and James Reimer and defenseman Jason Demers.Huberdeaus six-year deal goes into effect for the 2017-18 season. Ekblad is under contract through 2025, Yandle through 2023 and Barkov, Trocheck and Smith all through 2022.Huberdeau was essentially the last offseason question mark, at least in terms of when a new deal was coming. The 2013 Calder Trophy winner had a career-best 20 goals and 59 points last season, the point total being third-best on the Panthers as hes flourished on a line with Barkov and Jagr.In each of his last two seasons he has posted over 50 points and has developed into a key component of our teams offense, Tallon said.Huberdeau has 58 goals and 114 assists in 272 NHL games, all with Florida. Justin Reid Texans Jersey .J. -- Seven games into a disappointing season, New York Giants defensive catalyst Jason Pierre-Paul is getting the feeling hes back. Kahale Warring Texans Jersey . Cronulla star Ben Barba admits he took it upon himself to step up in the absence of the clubs State of Origin stars in Sundays NRL win over Penrith.NSW Origin quintet James Maloney, Jack Bird, Wade Graham, Andrew Fifita and skipper Paul Gallen are all in camp ahead of Wednesdays game three, but that didnt stop the Sharks securing their 13th win in a row.And Barba played a major role in the win, scoring two tries to take his season tally to 11 - the most since his Dally M medal-winning season in 2012.The 27-year-old said he had a major shift in mindset before the clash against the Panthers.I didnt say too much during the week but I thought with some of the older boys out this week there was a chance there for me to rev the boys up there a little bit, Barba said.I really tried to take a leadership role there with some of the guys out. It was a really special win. Im glad I took the chances when I did.Twice the former Canterbury dynamo showed his trademark acceleration to bllast the Panthers for back-to-back tries in the first half that helped set up the victory.ddddddddddddHowever Barba said he hadnt returned to his top speed, revealing both Valentine Holmes and Sosaia Feki had covered him for pace at the club.He conceded he might never reach the same speed that catapulted him into stardom all those years ago.All that stuff was four or five seasons ago so Im never going to be quick as I was, he said. But I guess Im a little bit smarter now. I try to use that to the best of my ability in terms of picking my times when to run.Im using the other guys at the back (Sosaia Feki and Valentine Holmes) better too.The more I can use them to cart the ball back into the line, Im thankful for them because they allow me to do my stuff in attack.Thats been the big difference for me this year - Im a lot smarter and a lot wiser.
